This morning I started Dreamweaver 8 as usual and was faced with an error message saying the that dwscriptsExtData.js has a reference error. After clicking on “ok” Dreamweaver continues to start but dialogs are somehow messed up and you are not able to copy and paste. So, after searching for a solution we found the following to work.

Note that the "Application Data" folder is hidden by default, so you’ll need to make sure that your Windows Explorer Folder Options are set to View Hidden Folders.
Thanks for this fix, any idea what caused it so I might avoid this in the future?
Thanks,
David
Hi David
I d’ not know why this happens. Actually it never happend since the time I wrote this post. I am just guessing that Dreamweaver has a problem when there is not enough RAM available. On my development machine I run Dreamweaver, ColdFusion and a Oracle Database. This all sums ups to a 1.8 GB of RAM (Oracle takes up about 800MB depending on how many data and WHAT data is in the database).
I see other errors like Javascript errors when opening a CF page within Dreamweaver, but as mentionend, only when RAM is high.
Hi, thanks for the fix, work like a charm.
I had a crash (not related to dreamweaver, but dreamwaever was open at this moment) and just after the next startup this error came up.
Yes !
Thanks you, I had this probleme today !
hey man you rule! i was going crazy with that problem i didn’t know what to do
thanks a lot
god bless you
hi, i am having a simlar problem with dreamweaver, i get several messages like the one you posted and then when i try opening the commands menu it produces another error and refuses to open and none of my plug ins will work. i was just wondering, will this fix work for my problem?
Thanks for posting this! IN my configuration, the file was called WinFileCache*.dat
Thanks for your great suggestion, even worked on a Mac.
The Mac file is:
%useraccount%:Library:Application Support:Macromedia:Dreamweaver 8:Configuration:MacFileCache-xxxxxx.dat
Thanks Again
Fin
I love you
As with a previous post, I wrote some really really really bad code that loaded up my memory, all open apps died as a result, and had to three finger salute hard.
Upon re-entry, DW made this complaint as well as all sorts of _onOpen complaints, also could not cut and paste.
Whomever figured this out needs should get a cookie for it
Thanks again, Bob
Worked like a charm. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the help! I have been freaking out at these stupid errors, and now its fixed! thanks.
Nick
I didn´t find that .dat file, where should i look??
Thanks,
Florencia
You will need to unhide your system files within the Windows Explorer. Did you do that?
Thank you so much!
It happened to me as well when Dreamweaver wasn’t properly closing during a shutdown of my system. On the next boot I kept getting an error relating to "dwscriptsExtData.js".
Florencia, if you are using Win XP:
As was mentioned before, you will not see the ‘Application Data’ folder by default. You will need to do the following:
1) Click on "My Computer".
2) In the menu bar, select "Tools", then "Folder Options".
3) Click the "View" tab.
4) Under the "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
5) Click "Apply to All Folders".
You should now be able to access the hidden files.
6) Goto "C:\Documents and Settings\[YOURUSERNAME]\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration".
7) Look for "WinFileCache*.dat" file in this path and delete.
There you go. Next time you boot up Dreamweaver, it will work properly.

Wow! I was about to uninstall DW, but I found this, and I didn’t think it would work…but it did! Most of the time, troubleshooting doesn’t work out for me, so this really made me happy. Thank you so much!

I can not find the WinFileCache! I have looked in every folder in DW8, nothing, I sent the little puppy searching too, it came back empty handed (or pawed), and I typed the path in the search box that did not work either. I have selected "show hidden files" too. I could delete the whole Configuration folder or is that too drastic? Any ideas? Thanks Rich
i got solution, iam happy
thanx
To Richard:
You will need to enable "see hidden files" within Windows Explorer or else you will not see the files.
hello

thank’s
very very
very helpful–really worked! thanks!
All I can say is, after a year this sound bit of advice and your knowledge is still helping so many people, congratulations. Macromedia you owe this guy a pint.
Thank you!!!!
thnx, it’s working now!!
I had the same problem. Probably due to RAM or improper shutdowns. I tried "Repair" DW, it didn’t work. I then uninstalled and re-installed DW, it didn’t work either.
Until I googled the issue, It led me here.
Thanks a million.
Guys I tried all of the above, searched the whole Macromedia file and still can’t find the .dat file
You need to show your hidden system files. This is a setting in the folder properties.
Tried that and did a searc in Dreamweaver 8 file, still can’t find it
thanks a lot for this help. I was going crazy on this problem. - uday koyande
this is the location for win file
C:\Documents and Settings\uday.koyande\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration
Hey you are awesome! I have been trying forever to fix this…the error is really annoying because it wouldn’t let me insert flash media…anyway, you’re amazing and I think Macromedia/Adobe should put you on payroll.
Thanks
This has saved me an awful lot of time and hair

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration
thank you so much! it totally worked.
i had almost gone nuts, i was starting to think a friend may have sabotaged me until i googled it and found this solution. THANK YOU SO MUCH
This solution didn’t fix my particular problem, but if you’re on a Mac, this file is located at:
/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8/Configuration/
Mine had a numeric extension on it, but the start of the file name was the same as the one listed in this solution, and it had a .dat extension.
Good luck!
Mac update: Here’s how I fixed my problem:
- deleted all Macromedia related folders in Application Support for all users
- deleted all Macromedia related folders in Application Support in the master Library folder
- re-installed DW8 and patches
What a pain, since I now have to set up all my sites all over again… but at least things are working again now.
Great job. I had to kill the cache file for this to work too.
thanks a great deal.
u just saved me alot of headache.
Just a quick note that this solution also works in DW CS3.
I also crashed before starting to see the same dialogs.
And now… happiness!
Thanks from Carlsbad California!
