Car, Bluetooth and BlackBerry

2008 September 6

One and a half year ago I got myself a Audi Q7, actually one of the first around in our country. It is a nice car (if you like the size of it) and the MMI is very intuitive. It had TV, DVD and a very good navigation system build in. What I liked a lot was that I could get my BlackBerry Curve 8310 working within minutes over bluetooth.

Five months ago, I switched to the latest VW Touareg 2 model and since then never looked back. The Touareg is a much nicer car, drives smoother and overall just more my type of car. If you are in business for getting one then I suggest you add the air and sport suspension to it. Anyhow, the Touareg 2 also comes with the latest Muldimedia System RNS510.

But the biggest drawback I have with the Touareg 2 is that I can not get my BlackBerry 8310 connected over Bluetooth. So far, I have tried about everything there is, but still no go. The RNS510 is a much newer system then the one I had in the Audi Q7 and thus it is even more confusing that the BlackBerry does not work. In the meantime, I also upgraded the BlackBerry to OS 4.5, but the Touareg still does not see the device.

Anybody has any ideas what else there is to try?

First, I appreciate it very much that you like German cars;) So here is my pragmatic German answer to your question: You switched to another car (that might have been not too unexpensive), so why don’t you just switch to another mobile? Try a Nokia;)

A typical black and white German answer :-)

There are reasons why someone uses a BlackBerry and I think you have not one, right? Second, the car was the same price as my previous Q7 since I bought the top model.

So still, I need a solution!

I have now confirmed what I feared with VW. There is NO way to make the BlackBerry work with the current RNS510 system. There is a adapter for around $900 that can be used and then it will work.

I will post some more details if anybody wants.
