  SQL Developer 1.2 features Migration Workbench Oracle | (0)

  Our favorite database vendor, Oracle released the other day the new Version of SQL Developer. With it you are not only able to manage your Oracle database (of course) but also work against a MS SQL or a MySQL database. This all for free. Now, Oracle just added an advanced Migration Workbench to it as well. With the Migration Workbench you can migrate over any Access, MS SQL or MySQL database to an Oracle database the easy way. They even put together some nice tutorials for you to see.

  There are some things in Oracle that seam to be odd when you come from another SQL database. One of these "odd" commands is that there is no automatic incrementation within the SQL syntax.   To increase the performance of an insert into an Oracle database one can use the /*+ append */ hint while doing an insert. Actually, by using the append hint, you ensure that Oracle always grabs "fresh" data blocks by raising the high-water-mark for the table.   Good news for the developers over at FCKEditor. Oracle has chosen their brilliant WYSIWYG-Editor for their latest release of Application Express. We are using FCKEditor all over in our system and think it is the best editor out there. Integrates nicely and works very well. Now all that there is to add is some Safari and better Opera support :-)

  While working on importing video data into the Oracle database I came upon an continued error message from ColdFusion that went like (among others): "The request has exceeded the allowable time limit Tag: CFSTOREDPROC" This was strange because I have used the code in question for a long time and uploaded even large video files (50MB or more) to the database without problems.   Get Column Name and Data Type from Oracle with SQL Oracle | (0)

  Just a short tip on how to retrieve the Column Name and the related Data Type with SQL. Simply issue the following SQL within Oracle: select column_name, data_type from all_tab_columns where table_name = 'YOURTABLENAME' This will return you a output with the column name and the data type for it. Remember that Oracle is case sensitive and the table names are all in uppercase in your where select for the table!

  For users that are using a Windows (XP/2003) German (Switzerland) version and want to install the Oracle 10gR2 database release, they will find that the installation of the database configuration utility will abort with the error messages: ORA-00604: error ocured at recursive SQL level1 ORA-02248: invalid option for ALTER SESSION So, what is the problem and how to solve it?   Actually there are some installation instructions out there that explain very well how to install ColdFusion 7.x on Linux as well for Oracle on Linux.   While executing an PL/SQL script today on our Oracle 10g Database I was confronted with this error message: Oracle Error: SP2-0027: Input is too long (> 2499 characters) - line ignored I then looked up the line of code in the sql script and copied it over to Oracle Developer and run it.   The other day I mentioned that I am (finally) back on the Mac.   It is final! Oracle announced Unbreakable Linux during the Oracle Open World Show. Now, since there is a big player entering the Linux market this is going to be interesting what will happen in the future:-) This is very exciting because one can go and download Enterprise Linux from the Oracle website and deploy it immediately with full Enterprise support.   ColdFusion and Oracle inserting PL/SQL Block and Error PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol Applications, CFML, Oracle | (0)

  If you want to insert a PL/SQL block using the <cfquery> tag you might see that your trigger, package, etc. is being saved in the Oracle database but it throws an error while executing, but Inserting the same PL/SQL statement within Oracle works just fine. Now before you go and rewrite your whole SQL statement within the <cfquery> many times there is luckily an easy answer to this challenge; With ColdFusion you can not issue a SQL statement within the <cfquery> tag which uses a ";".
